Metamora,
Michigan consists of a township and quaint village in the bustling metro area of
Detroit. Located in
Lapeer
County, Metamora is a quiet area, where residents and visitors can escape the fast-paced lifestyle of the surrounding cities.
The 2000 Census reported a population of 507 in the village of Metamora, which consists of less than one square mile. In the township of Metamora, there are
4,184 in the entire 35 square mile township. The village is actually located within the boundaries of the township. Both entities enjoy a rate of crime well below the state and national averages. The region is at an elevation of 1,040 feet, with a challenging climate that results in constantly changing weather. The area experiences more than 30 inches of precipitation each year, a large portion of which is in the form of snow.
Metamora’s early economy relied primarily on lumber and agriculture. Although agriculture still plays a role in the current economy, manufacturing and retail trade are Metamora’s leading local industries. With a household’s median income at $61,250, and the median income for a family at $67,425, Metamora residents enjoy median incomes above the
state average. While farms and small industry comprise Lapeer County’s workforce, many residents find employment in the heavy industry of surrounding counties. Those who commute have a mean travel time of approximately 32 minutes.
Pontiac is 20 miles away from Metamora, while the city of
Detroit is 40 miles away. Both cities provide a wealth of additional job opportunities for Metamora residents. Detroit is the 11th most populous U.S. city and widely known as the automotive center of the world.
General Motors and seventeen other Fortune 500 companies operated their headquarters from the Detroit area. Other significant industries include advertising, computer software and medical services.
Education in the counties surrounding Lapeer is abundant.
Oakland University is in
Rochester Hills and the Detroit Campus of the
University of Phoenix is in Troy.
Flint has several fine opportunities for higher learning, including
Baker
College, Kettering University and Flint’s campus of the

Michigan. All of these quality colleges and universities are within a half an hour’s drive of Lapeer County.
Metamora is a scenic community that provides parks, the Hunters Creek Club and an exclusive 18-hole
golf course for recreation. Venturing further out in to the surrounding area, visitors will find opportunities for bowling, camping, hiking, horseback riding and water sports activities at Norway Lake in Lapeer. The
Seven Ponds Nature Center is nearby in
Dryden.
